A. H. Riise has been my go-to brand for years. Even my very first review was of an A. H. Riise rum. This Danish brand offers a premium line – Non Plus Ultra. This means “Nothing more beyond“, an inscription from Hercules’ Pillars in Gibraltar. This was the edge of the world for old Romans. Beyond this, the civilized world ended, it was the top of all the best. An it is the top of the whole A. H. Riise range. Non Plus Ultra offers the classicA. H. Riise Non Plus Ultra, Non Plus Ultra Sauternes Cask and our Non Plus Ultra Black edition. This rum was originally designated for the Riise family only and was not marketed as such.
The main trait for the Black edition is that it has added extra ageing in charred oak barrels. It was originally supposed to be a 2017 limited edition with only 6000 bottles. For 2018, a second release was planned with 12000 bottles, so not much of a limited edition anymore. This does not change the fact it is a wonderful solera mixture of molasses rums with the average age of 30 years.
Very dark rum
The taste
This premium rum is mahogany in colour and 42 % in strength. And like with any other A. H. Riise rum, you may experience the typical smell and taste of tropical fruits, sour cherries, oranges and caramel. The finish offers more particular, piquant notes of tobacco and oak barrels (also cedar wood, but I have not noticed that), which give Black Edition the specific taste.
This is one of the best rums I have ever tried and I highly recommend it. This is supported by its rating on RumRatings.com, where it has 8.5 out of 10. Do not hesitate and buy this.
